Winter is officially here, and there’s no better way to embrace this chilly season than hitting the ice rink. If you want to go ice skating, you have several great options just a quick drive from Greer!
Ice on Main
Thanks to United Community Bank, you can enjoy the brisk winter air and skate in the middle of downtown. UCB has turned the Courtyard Marriott plaza into an open-air ice skating rink, complete with festive string lights and a shimmering Christmas tree. UCB’s Ice on Main will run through January. The rink is located at Corner of S. Main and Broad Streets, Greenville, South Carolina 29601.
Pavilion Recreation Complex
The Pavilion offers a full-sized public ice skating rink open seven days per week. This year-round ice rink hosts recreational skating as well as skating lessons and hockey classes. In addition to the rink, the recreation complex also features tennis courts, inline skating, a bounce house, and other facilities. The Pavilion is located at 400 Scottswood Road, Taylors, South Carolina 29687.
The Big Ice at BSWA
You and your friends can go skating on the same ice that the Greenville Swamp Rabbits play on now that the Bon Secours Wellness Arena opens its rink to the public. The “Big Ice” opens on winter afternoons, with music playing overhead in the indoor arena. On certain occasions, they will also provide free rentals if you donate goods. They also offer sleds and wagons for guests of all abilities. The BSWA is located at 650 N Academy Street, Greenville, South Carolina 29601.
Ice Skating Basics
If this winter marks your first time on the ice, you’re in for an exciting new experience. Ice skating requires some balance and effort, but it all becomes easier with practice. Once you’re on the ice, you can start by walking in place, then try to push ahead with one foot. Once you’re comfortable moving forward, try to switch feet. Next, practice stopping by pushing your blades out slightly, pointing your toes inward like a wedge. If you’ve ever been snow skiing before, you’ll notice that stopping on ice skates is similar to the “pizza” technique.
